A Vibrant Celebration of Diwali at the Corn Exchange
The Corn Exchange is excited to be part of the 15th Dashehra Diwali Mela on Saturday 5th October, a dazzling celebration of light, culture, and community right here in Manchester!
Organised by the Indian Association Manchester, this free event promises an unforgettable day full of vibrant performances, cultural experiences, and family-friendly fun. Whether you’re familiar with the festival or looking to experience something new, Dashehra Diwali Mela is the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in the rich traditions of Diwali!
Between 1pm and 8pm, Exchange Square will be thriving with a mixture of live dances, traditional performances, street food, craft stalls and community parades!
Celebrate Diwali with the Story of Ramayana
Throughout the day, you’ll also be able to enjoy performances that tell the story of Ramayana, a cherished epic that forms the heart of Diwali celebrations. It’s a wonderful way to learn more about the cultural significance of the festival while taking in the lively atmosphere of the Mela.
The Day Kicks off at 1pm!
The day kicks off at 1pm on Exchange Square with a special Ganesh Blessing, bringing good fortune to the festivities. The air will be filled with the energising sounds of the Maharashtrian Dhol Tasa Lezim band and Malayali drummers, setting the perfect tone for the Mela! Exchange Square will come alive with rhythm, signalling the start of an action-packed day.
Throughout the event, Exchange Square and New Cathedral Street will host a vibrant Indian Market, where you can explore traditional Indian food, crafts, and products. From aromatic spices to beautifully handmade crafts, it’s the perfect place to soak up the sights and flavours of India right here in Manchester!
Entertainment from 2pm and 6.30pm
Between 2pm and 6.30pm, the square will be buzzing with a variety of entertainment! Keep an eye out for interactive walkaround performers, including larger-than-life puppets, musicians, and dhol drummers; contemporary dance performances; and even a Bollywood Dance Party on the main stage!
Lantern Craft Workshop at the Corn Exchange
From 2-5pm, come inside the Corn Exchange for a free Lantern Craft Workshop, located in the space next to Delhi House Café. It’s the perfect hands-on activity for all ages – a chance to get creative and make your very own lantern to carry in the parade later on! The workshop will be led by Global Grooves.
And here’s a little extra treat for everyone who takes part in the workshop – 10% off food at Delhi House Café! Whether you’re craving a flavourful curry or a classic Indian street food dish, it’s the perfect way to refuel during the celebrations.
To claim, simply pick up a printed voucher from the crafts table on Saturday and exchange with a member of staff at Delhi House. This discount is only valid on Saturday 5th October!
The Lantern Parade & Light Projection
As the sun sets, the excitement continues with a magnificent lantern parade, where all the handmade lanterns will light up the streets, leading the way to a spectacular light show. The light show will be projected right onto the Corn Exchange building, creating a magical atmosphere that you won’t want to miss!
